We are Salt

Matthew 5:13

13 “You are salt for the Land. But if salt becomes tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except being thrown out for people to trample on.Complete Jewish Bible(CJB) Copyright © 1998 by David H. Stern. All rights reserved.

Mark 9:49-50

49 Indeed, everyone is going to be salted with fire. 50 Salt is excellent, but if it loses its saltiness, how will you season it? So have salt in yourselves — that is, be at peace with each other.”Complete Jewish Bible(CJB) Copyright © 1998 by David H. Stern. All rights reserved.

First we will explore the P-Shat level of Interpretation within this saying of Jesus. The literal meaning of Scripture is always where we need to start so we can see if nothing else, the context of what is being spoke about. In this sense the main idea is that we all need to be the seasoning of the World. Jesus is explaining to His Disciples that they are actually the Salt of the World.

The only way salt can lose its proper taste and qualities, is by becoming contaminated. What can contaminate salt? Well, it can become mixed with dirt (earth). Dust and dirt in combination with water and air can change salt into something else. Such salt cannot be used in food.

The words thrown out and trampled by others, probably refer to the fact that even contaminated salt can be used in some manner, maybe the people of that day realized that in case of a snow or ice storm they could use salt to melt the ice. We do not know, although we do know that the Roman Road system was very complex and everyone used it to move around the Empire.

Most of us understand what Salt is all about, it is something that purifies things, it preserves things by removing the moisture out of meats, fruits, and vegetable, it also seasons foods so they can display their true flavors. Without salt the world would be a very bland place. Even within spicy food, if you do not use salt it will be just a bland hot dish of food.

Needless to say salt in the Earth is a huge blessing.

But it can also be a curse, too much salt in a dish makes the dish inedible, and to be able to salt a dish properly takes time to learn.

If the salt on the road is not fully removed from your car, what happens, rust. So it removes ice but also hurts the cars.

This is the first understanding of salt, we can see that we as a people need to preserve Gods Voice on the planet, which in my opinion means that we should follow the moral commands, and be fountains of Gods Word flowing from an unknown source but still flowing.

We need to allow our lives to be an influence on others. Sometimes this is as small of a thing as letting a person go first in a line and then genuinely smile at them, other times it is giving someone $100 to tide them over until they have enough. Sometimes it just means listening to someones heartache with a neutral ear, not speaking just listening.

In all the ways above we can be Salt. Salt, the hidden part of tasty food, the amazing flavor enhancer, Jesus said we need to be that flavor enhancer to the World.

The question is how?

I believe the answer is very simple, read and study the Torah, and be led of the Holy Spirit in all things. I think as believers we always think its difficult to be the Salt, but all it means is to allow the relationship we have been given with the Lord to just flow out of our lives.
